I actually bought these probiotics as a friend of mine had used them on her son and recommended them. The OptiBac range include a blend for babies & children, starting at around £6 for 10 sachets, and around £12 for a box of 30. Here's a little bit about what OptiBac say about their product:
From 6 months onwards, introducing For your child's health probiotic into your child's diet supports digestive health and natural immune defences. Medical research shows that good probiotic levels helps support digestion, immunity and energy for infants and children, in particular
•Formula-fed babies
•Babies, infants & children during and after antibiotics
•Infants delivered by Caesarean section
•Premature infants
•Babies and children with digestive problems such as colic, diarrhoea, constipation and lactose intolerance
•Babies & children with allergies and skin irritations such as eczema
Antibiotics in infants and children may result in unhealthy intestinal conditions, as antibiotics deplete normal levels of probiotic bacteria. Imbalanced levels of bacteria can manifest in the form of allergies and digestive problems in children; whereas healthy probiotic levels can contribute to their overall health and wellbeing.
A healthy balance of probiotics in the intestines provides specific enzymes needed in the digestion of particular substances, production of B complex vitamins and vitamin K, and improves the absorption and uptake of minerals and nutrients in the diet, including calcium which is very important during the early years of growth.
Introducing OptiBac Probiotics For your child's health into your child's diet supports the development of friendly probiotic bacteria promoting good digestive health and encouraging natural immune defences.
Furthermore, this children's formula by OptiBac Probiotics is completely free from sugars, artificial flavours, colours, preservatives and additives which can be found in many other childrens probiotics.
I was a little sceptical at first about the powder sachets. My son, who is extremely fussy, would turn his nose up at anything that has even the slightest bit of strange flavour to it, so I really didn't want powder to add to things. He was great at taking his orange flavour vitamin tablet and there were plenty of other probiotics on the market that were in chewable tablet form that I was initially looking only at those until my friend mentioned OptiBac.
The reason I was looking into Probiotics in the first place was because one of my twins has Autism. During my research into Autism, I read a lot about how children on the Autistic Spectrum suffer with digestive problems. In particular, an article about an American actress,
Jenny McCarthy stood out as she claims to have cured her sons Autism, and one of the important factors was diet and rebalancing his gut. Alarm bells started ringing out for me with my son was when I read about Autistic children having chronic Diarrhea, frequent respiritory infections in the first few years of their lives, ear infections, exposure to Antibiotics many times in the first couple of years & being extremely picky eaters. I decided to tackle his low immune system first with the probiotics, after all this was the least I could do adding a dietary supplement. I ordered 30 sachets from Amazon straight away.
The first week I added the powder to juice and waited hesitantly as he sipped it, as I'd tasted it and personally wouldn't have wanted to continue! But he drank the whole lot. I decided that drinks were probably going to be hit and miss as he often didn't drink full cups, so I started to add it to his cereal after that. It wasn't too successful at first as he'd eat some and leave the rest and I wondered was it the taste? The white powder was very fine so not visible or textured, so I could only think there was an aftertaste he didn't really like but as he's unable to communicate much, I couldn't ask him and he couldn't tell me.
Over the coming few weeks he increased his appetite at breakfast and ate more, so I knew he was getting it all, but sometimes I added it to a beaker of milk instead, which he drank enthusiastically, despite having been a bit hit and miss with milk for several months.
After a few weeks his diarrhea improved greatly. Not completely gone, but more like 50/50 loose/solid stools. Unfortunately the downside of chronic Diarrhea is an inability to pass more solid stools easily when you do address it, so he was in pain with constipation recently despite the stools being what most people would consider a 'soft' consistency. It hurt him, his bowels weren't used to working to pass the stools as he was so used to stools the consistency of peanut butter!
The other things I have noticed now, although I'm still a little sceptical as it's early days, are his eczema patches on his legs and torso have cleared up and he's not suffering for very long with illness/infections. He's getting the usual winter bugs, but I think he's fighting them off quicker. The really suprising thing is the eczema though, and if he can keep that gone I'll be shouting about OptiBac to anyone who will listen!
I'm definitely going to continue buying OptiBac sachets!
